Improvisation is a vast subject, which we will consider only insofar as it applies to sight-reading. How does improvisation help us to read music at sight? We improvise when the score is incomplete and we must supplement it (lead sheets, continuo accompaniments, hymns, etc.), when the score is too complete and we must reduce it (unplayable orchestral reductions, etc.), when we don’t have time to read all the notes and we make up something to keep the rhythm going, or when the page turner turns too late (or too soon).
