Playing by ear might seem to be the very antithesis of sight-reading. In sight-reading, information is drawn from a written score through the eyes, whereas in playing by ear, the music is reconstituted from aural memory using the inner ear, without the aid of a score. In reality though, sight-reading is not merely a mechanical decoding of notation with the eyes, but a highly complex activity that relies heavily on the inner ear and aural memory.
