Dotted rhythms are a frequent source of rhythmic inaccuracy in sight-reading, and even sometimes in performances. Our difficulty with them is sometimes due to the visual confusion of notation, especially when a dotted rhythm goes over the beat, or when rests obscure the location of the beat. Most often, though, it is because we are not actively subdividing the beat in our minds. For dotted rhythms (or any rhythms, for that matter) to be accurate, we must keep a continuous pulse in our minds, and constantly subdivide the beats into their smallest parts as we play.
