Brouillards (Fog) opens Debussy’s second book of Preludes in a murky mist of sound. The composer accomplishes this with bitonality, evident from the outset with the juxtaposition of both C and C-Sharp as key centers. The piece offers a wide range of possibilities to employ the damper pedal to create exotic sonorities and effects. Alternating between 'foggy' landscapes and flashes of brilliance, Brouillards offers interpretive and technical challenges, yet Debussy’s writing—even of rapid arpeggios—is always pianistic!
