Introduction
Traditionally, we are taught to read the notes on the staff by memorising the names of the lines and spaces, first in treble clef, then in bass clef. Teachers use various phrases and words as mnemonic devices, and devise drills to internalise the names of the notes and their locations on the staff. This method is fine as far as it goes, but it treats each note as a separate entity, ignoring, and even obscuring, the relationships between the notes.
