How to Play Fast (Combined Ticket)

Many players can get their pieces up to a certain speed, but there appears to be a ceiling beyond which they cannot go. As the tempo increases, so the playing falls apart and loses all sense of flow - added to which the hands and arms seize up, buckling under the strain.

One of the most common questions our website readers ask is how to get a piece up to the full speed while retaining the feeling of coordination and control that is possible at slower tempos. In these practical workshops, Graham Fitch uses a selection of pieces from elementary, intermediate and advanced levels to demonstrate various ways to move them from an initial, slow learning speed up to full performance tempo.

The workshops are divided into three sessions for players of varying levels:

  • Elementary (Grade 1 – 3) @ 13:30 – 14:30 – Click here to book for this workshop
  • Intermediate (Grades 4 – 6) @ 15:00 – 16:00 – Click here to book for this workshop
  • Advanced (Grade 7 - 8+) @ 16:30 – 17:30 – Click here to book for this workshop

How it works

Repertoire examples at the appropriate level have been selected for each workshop and download links will be provided upon sign-up. Graham will uses these pieces to show you several techniques for building speed which you will then be able to apply to fast passages within your own pieces after the workshop.

Some of the featured works are also from examination board syllabuses and therefore the workshops will be of particular interest to teachers. A discounted ticket is available for teachers or pianists who are interested in attending or obtaining the resources from all three sessions.

The session will be recorded and all participants will receive a link to download the video. Therefore, if you are unable to attend the session on the day, you will still be able to watch the video at your convenience.
