Fred Karpoff presents a set of two online workshops focussing on elements of technique essential for progressing from intermediate to advanced playing. The first session provides a step-by-step approach for cultivating fluent, fast arpeggios. The second session shows how to develop effortless, continuous trills and tremolos.

Making the Jump to Advanced Arpeggios (14:00 - 15:30 GMT)

Multiple octave arpeggios are an essential component of advanced piano technique. Mastering them expands your technical foundation, enabling greater fluency and coordination in all movements. In this online workshop, Fred Karpoff demonstrates a step-by-step approach for cultivating well-coordinated, fast, two-octave arpeggios.

The session will start with an analysis of common problems and will then demonstrate elements such as alignment, three-dimensional motion in a one-octave arpeggio, the throw, combining the throw with three-dimensional shaping, released fingers and utilising momentum effectively.

The workshop is suitable for pianists from late elementary and intermediate levels upwards and will also be of significant interest to teachers. Illustrations will feature repertoire examples from intermediate through to advanced works by Burgmuller, Czerny, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy.

Effortless Trills and Tremolos (16:00 – 17:30 GMT)

Trills and tremolos are an outstanding gauge of optimal coordination at the piano. These elements challenge students, teachers and professionals alike. In this online workshop, Fred Karpoff will draw upon repertoire examples of all levels to demonstrate how to achieve effortless, continuous trills and tremolos.

The presentation opens with a demonstration of characteristic elements from the standard teaching and performing repertoire. Instruction will continue through live demonstration and a detailed handout covering technical components and repertoire excerpts will further guide the audience.

Examples from repertoire will progress from trills in beginning repertoire such as the Mozart Minuet, K. 4 and the Bach Short Prelude in C, to elegant shorter trills such as the opening of Mozart’s Sonata in C, K. 545 and then onto longer trills in Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy. Emerging tremolo figures in early Beethoven and Clementi progress to Mendelssohn and the famous tremolos in Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata, culminating in advanced figures and double tremolos such as those found in the Beethoven Sonata Op. 111, Brahms concerti and Rachmaninoff’s Etudes-Tableaux.

Excellent coordination of trills and tremolos frees up pianists to master other technical challenges of all varieties, at all levels, and in any style. Therefore, this session is appropriate for all pianists and teachers!

How it works

Participants will have the opportunity to try out each of the concepts presented at their keyboards in break-out sessions and gain feedback from Fred (this is entirely optional!). The workshop will also be recorded and worksheets with various exercises and repertoire examples will be sent to you in advance of the event.

These workshops have been recorded in our studios and all ticket holders will receive a link to view high-definition recordings after each of them. Therefore, if you are unable to join us live or missed some of the events, you will still be able to watch the workshop recordings and access the resources at your convenience.
